Reference Material

Below, are some images that I have found that I am using as reference material for my model for the photo shoot for the article "Eat Well. Stay Well." Finding this material will make it easier for both myself and Emma (model) so that she and I  both know what is expected to come out of the photo shoot. Hopefully this will make it clear that the clothing style is to be casual, along with natural looking make up. I intend on taking numerous images with different poses so that I can decide what I feel will look best on my DPS. This will include images of her looking happy, sad and indecisive. I am also considering uses images which will have a comical effect, such as with chocolates in her mouth.

Below, are images that I have found that I intend to use as reference material for my front cover and contents page photo shoots. These images will allow both myself and Hannah (model) to know what is hopefully going to come out of the photo shoot. I hope to achieve images of Hannah stood in different poses which are commonly associated with dance such as the arabesque and fouette. It is also clear from these images what I would like Hannah to wear, as the outfit will easily be associated with dance.

Monitoring log - 24/1/2014

This week I intended on beginning the creation of my InDesign products for each of my double page spreads. This was successful as I was able to create the layouts for “Diets. Dangerous or Delightful?” and “Eat Well. Stay Well.” In terms of my diets DPS, I was successful in creating the layout, inserting the article into each break out box and adding colours, to complete this double page spread I need to insert images which I have not scheduled to take for 2 more weeks, download and use the correct fonts which I have stated in my treatment and add page numbers. I believe the creation of this DPS has been very successful this week. For my eat well DPS I have created a basic outline of shapes for the text, images and break out boxes, this has enabled me to know where I will insert my article and images.
During this week I also gained feedback for my article “Diets. Dangerous or Delightful?” The feedback I received was very positive including comments about the use of small sentences and subheadings for the pros and cons. It was said to be different due to not using one long, continuous article however this was seen as a good thing. I am very pleased about the feedback I have received.
I feel that everything ran smoothly this week as I was successful in the creation of my DPS’ and gathering feedback. The only difficulty I faced was finding computers around the college that I was able to use InDesign on as I much prefer to use a Mac and these computers are often in use throughout the day.

Below is a screen shot of my progress of my "Diets. Dangerous or Delightful?" double page spread. This shows what I have successfully done during this week. It has consisted of using shapes and the fill tool to use different colours for each break out box and inserting text into each box.

This is a print screen of the main outline of what my "Eat Well. Stay Well." will look like. This is a very basic outline of what I hope my final product will look. My next plan of action is to begin using colours to add detail to my DPS, write my kicker and insert my article.

I believe the Northern Echo will be pleased with my progress this week as I have successfully created the main outline of these two double page spreads. This means that my production is well on the way and once these are completed all that needs to be done is the photography and inputting my chosen images into each page.

I feel that the current stage of my production does mirror what is stated in my treatment as I have followed the layouts I had initially chosen and used the same colours. The only major difference that is clear is the layout of "Eat Well. Stay Well." as I have moved the main image to the second page of the DPS rather than having it on the first page before the article, I have done this because I believe it will appear more continuous rather than jumping straight into it without giving the reader an idea of what the article is about.

Monitoring Log - 17/1/2014

This week, I had scheduled to write the first draft of my article “Diets. Dangerous or Delightful?”, make amendments on the InDesign product I made for my mock ups and perfect it to a level that I am happy with and gain feedback on the article I had just written from my target audience.  I successfully wrote the first draft of my article and planned a way in which I intended on gaining feedback, however due to the process of making amendments on my mock up, I was unable to find time to gain the feedback this week, to ensure that I do not fall behind in my schedule I have planned to gain this feedback at the start of next week.

When making amendments on my mock up, the main focus was to tidy it up and make it appear more professional, I hoped to do this by using advanced text wrap on my pull out quote, however this seemed more difficult than I first thought as there is a different process for doing it with text than there is with images, however with the guidance of my teacher I have now learnt how to do it. The next concern I had was the positioning of the pull out quote as I felt this was very important to get right, again this therefore made the process take longer,  therefore I decided to ask for the opinion of my teacher to see what she thought looked better. Below is a screen shot of the current positioning of my pull out quote and a comparison image of how it looked before I text wrapped it.

Despite this struggle of text wrapping the text, which unfortunately made the process take longer than I hoped, I feel that everything ran smoothly this week.

This week I have revisited the skill of text wrapping and have now advanced my knowledge in the way that I now know how to text wrap text rather than just imagery. I feel this will benefit me greatly during the production stage as it will enable me to make my DPS’ look as professional as possible.

Monitoring Log - 10/01/2014

I have organised my schedule in a way which will allow me to work my way through each section of my production. I have done this by sharing out the time equally between my three articles and my front cover and contents page. I have chosen to perfect my first article which I have already created mock ups for first as it means this is one fifth of my production that I will already be reasonably satisfied with.

I believe my schedule is realistic as I have considered other deadlines which I may be faced such as Extended Project, therefore I have considered other work which will be taking up my time. Although I have had to fit a lot of work into a short period of time I believe I will be able to complete it due to my time management skills.

I have built contingency time into my schedule towards the end of the time limit as it will allow me to catch up with any pieces that may need perfecting. This will become evident when I gain feedback and advice from my peers and assessor throughout the production stage.

The biggest challenges that I will face in my schedule will be completing the first draft of each piece within the time limit I have given myself. This is because I am unable to work on them at home due to not having access to InDesign or Photoshop.

This week I have managed to successfully complete my schedule with a realistic time scale which I believe I will be able to follow. I have also gained feedback from my target audience in terms of my flat plans. This has given me both positive and negative feedback which will enable me to create the most appealing and effective product for my target audience.

6th Jan
1 Schedule Creation: this week I will make sure that I create a realistic schedule to enable me to submit a completed project for the 15th February in accordance with the objectives outlined in my treatment. The schedule will be realistic, detailed and will contain 3 meaningful activities to complete as homework. Homework activities should take up four hours additional study time per week.

2 Schedule Creation: Today I will look at other commitments I have in my other A Levels including scheduled exams – this will enable me to produce a realistic schedule. In order to do this I will need to ask my other subject teachers about deadlines for homework/coursework during the next six weeks.

3 Flat Plan Audience Testing: during this lesson I will access feedback from members of my target audience in regard to my other 2 flat plans which I haven’t yet gained feedback from. This will allow me to make any changes prior to the actual production of my magazine therefore saving me time with final amendments when it comes to finalising my product.

4 Project Monitoring & beginning of production: In this lesson I will edit the double page spread, which I have already created. This will include ensuring that the colour scheme matches that I have chosen which is stated in my treatment. I will also be re arranging the layout to be sure that it’s professional. This will involve using text wrap to incorporate the pull out quote into the main body of text.

Homework 1: Revision for Psychology and Sociology mock.

Homework 2: Book necessary equipment and studio for the photo shoots, which need to be executed, which will be the front cover and one article DPS.

Homework 3: Contact all models that will feature in my magazine and those who I am photographing to keep them up to date with what is needed of them including makeup and clothing. I will also plan all the props, which are needed and decide suitable times to buy/collect them. This is important because one of my photo shoots will involve food and it is vital not to cause any risk of harm to the health of myself and models with out of date food.

Exams/other subject deadlines:

13th Jan
1 I will write the first draft of my second article, using research I have previously done including language techniques research, and with the assistance of my developed article plan I will be able to ensure that the article is suitable for the topic and target audience. At this stage I will also ensure that I have enough information for writing my

2 Continue writing article 2

3 I will finish making amendments to the material I produced for my mock up process of the first article. The feedback gained from the mock up feedback process will allow me to create a desirable product for my reader.

4 Project Monitoring & gain audience feedback for article 2 – Diets. Dangerous or Delightful to ensure that it will be suitable for my readers. This will allow me to get first hand opinions on what is good and what is bad about it.

Homework 1: Plan a method in which I will gain audience feedback on the newly written articles to allow me to gain feedback during the early stages of production to ensure that I have plenty of time to make any amendments or corrections to my articles.

Homework 2: Find extra reference material including poses for my models. This will include visual references which will be given to them prior to the photo shoot so that they can discover what they are comfortable with. During this time I will also read similar magazines to my own allowing me to gain knowledge, understanding and tips for my own magazine when creating my magazine which will include researching headers, story styles and sell lines/.

Homework 3:

Exams/other subject deadlines:

3
20th Jan
1 I will begin the production of my InDesign pages by writing headers, sell lines and creating the necessary shapes – including text boxes, and columns needed for each DPS and front cover. This will be easier to do as I will have gained feedback on my flat plans from the target audience. This will also involve having the correct measurements and having the correct fonts installed.

2 I will continue creating basic outlines for each of my double page spreads (diets and eat well) this will allow me to know that I have all the guidelines I need for one it comes to the complete production of my articles.

3 In this lesson I will begin to fill in my “Diets. Dangerous or Delightful? DPS, this includes using the colours I chose when creating my treatment for each break out box, inserting the article into the correct places and filling in the header and kicker.

4 Project Monitoring & writing up feedback received from target audience for article 2 – Diets. Dangerous or Delightful?

Homework 1: Using time out of class for Extended Project, which has a similar deadline to media. This will involve amending final report.

Homework2: I will create the basic outline for my front cover and contents page so that it is ready for when I have my photographs next week. This will be done in my free lessons as I am unable to access InDesign and Photoshop at home.

Homework 3: Write “Eat Well. Stay Well.” article

Exams/other subject deadlines:

27th Jan
1 As I have now taken my photographs for my front cover, I will begin sorting through the images to help me decide which photographs I will keep. As I am also going to be using the same group of images for my contents page. Once this is done it means that I will be able to have a smaller selection of images, which are of a high quality to choose from. However I will not delete the images that I am not going to use because I will be able to compare the quality and highlight the faults of the images e.g. if they are out of focus.

2 I will use this lesson to continue editing the photographs. This will include cropping and changing the contrast and balance if necessary.

3 As I will already have a basic outline for my front cover and contents page, I will now be able to begin piecing it together. This will include inserting images, headers, sell lines and colours.

4 I will be using this hour and a half lesson to do my second photoshoot for my “Eat Well. Stay Well.” article. This will be held in the photography studio at Queen Elizabeth 6th form college with the use of Emma as my model.

Homework 1: I will use my free lesson on Friday to write up my project monitoring as I will have used the lesson in which I usually would do it for my photoshoot.

3 will continue working on my Eat Well. Stay Well article DPS and once I feel this is at a secure stage I will begin inputting sell lines and the mast head onto my front cover, this will allow it to create a body to the page and make it easier to place the image which I have chosen to use.

4 Project Monitoring & continue working on “Eat Well. Stay Well.” and if necessary I will continue working on my front cover and contents page.

Homework 1: In my free first lesson on 3/2/2014 I will be doing the photo shoot for my front cover and contents page during this lesson. I have chosen to do this out of class because it is the most suitable time for my model. This photo shoot will involve me taking images of Hannah in various positions such as the arabesque position. The photo shoot will be held at Queen Elizabeth Photography Studios.

Homework 2:  Using time out of class for Extended Project, which has a similar deadline to media. This will involve finalising my log for EPQ.

Potential Locations - Description
Photograph of where you will shoot.
Is it suitable – how? Why? (Access, Lighting, Sound )
The first location that I will be using for my photo shoot is the studio which is located at QE sixth form college. This will be used for 3 out of 4 photo shoots that I will be doing as it will be the most suitable to ensure that I am able to gain the most appropriate and professional looking images for my magazine.
This is an image of the studio where I will be taking my images, the only difference from this image is that there will be a white background rather than a black background.
This is the most suitable place for me to take my photographs as is it easily accessible for both myself and my models due to being students at the sixth form. It is also suitable in terms of the available equipment as it is all provided in the studio including camera and lighting equipment. As other members of the college will be using the studio I will have to ensure that I book slots in advance to ensure that there are no overlaps. Booking a slot also means that I am gaining permission from the college to use the studio. The lighting will be suitable for the images I will be taking as there numerous professional lights accessible and a flash lighting kit and I will therefore be able to create the lighting effect needed to achieve the best images possible. As the studio consists of a backdrop this is the positioning of where all the images for the 3 shoots will be taken. I need to ensure that I do not take photographs with more width than the backdrop as this means I will have other features in the background such as the wall and other objects in the room. I will be using a white backdrop for all of my photo shoots meaning this doesn’t need to be changed between shoots.
Due to the lighting kit I will have to use wires and power points, to ensure there is no issues with health and safety I will make sure there are no trailing wires and that the plugs are in the sockets correctly with no liquids in the room which could cause spillages.
The main risk that could occur during a photo shoot in this location is that including the equipment and wires but these will be controlled properly and professionally to avoid any harm.
The second location that will be used is the home of one of my models. This is because it is the most accessible place for the photographs to be taken due to difficulties arranging times to meet.

This is an image of Nicola's living room where the photo shoot was executed. Due to furniture the only suitable place to do the shoot was in front of the curtains.
Although the location isn’t suitable in terms of gaining professional looking images like those which would be created in a studio, it is the most suitable for my model and I to meet. The permission needed is from the home owner who is also my model and therefore I had no issues in gaining this permission.
The lighting I will be using is natural due to not being able to access a studio lighting kit for in the house. To avoid any shadows I will be closing the curtains to avoid direct sunlight into the room as this would affect the effect I intend to create.
Due to difficulties with a plain wall to do the shoot, I will perform the photo shoot with the model stood in front of the curtains and any editing can be done after the photo shoot on Photoshop.
The extra props needed for the photo shoot are the model’s old clothes which she will be providing on the day of the photo shoot.
As it is in the model’s house there will be power sockets located around the room however to ensure that there is no risk of injury from the electricity no drinks will be in the room to avoid spillages when we are doing the photo shoot.
